There are many different coffee tables out there, but I wanted to make something different. After looking thru many different designs, I decided to build a square coffee table. To make it simple I just made three square boxes stacked on top of each other. Then I shifted the boxes around now we have a DIY Square Coffee Table.
Originally I wanted to have the section to be slightly rotated but after messing with it for some time I decided to have it just offsetting. I stained the middle section grey and the upper and lower sections Dark Walnut. This is a very simple built and here are the steps how I did it.
- Cut and Assemble the Top
- Assemble the Sides for the Upper Section
- Attach the Sides for the Lower Section
- Add Supporting Blocks to Upper Section
- Add Supporting Blocks to The Middle Section
- Attach the Lower Section

Dimensions

Step 1 – Cut and Assemble the Top
This wood coffee table has three sections. The top of each section is made with three boards that are the same length. Take 1×10 board and using a miter saw, cut 9 pieces to 27 ยพโ in length. Then drill pocket holes as shown in the picture. Assemble three boards together with wood glue and 1 ยผโ pocket hole screws. Repeat the process to get three top sections for each box.

Step 2 – Assemble the Sides for the Upper Section of the Coffee Table
Now take 1×4 and cut four pieces to 27 ยพโ in length, and four pieces to 29 ยผโ in length. The pieces that are 27 ยพโ long will have pocket holes on both ends but the 29 1/4″ pieces will not have any pocket holes. Attache these sideboards to the top section with wood glue and 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws. Now you have both the upper and middle sections complete.

Step 3 – Attach the Sides for the Lower Section of Coffee Table
When cutting boards for the lower section take 1×10 and cut two pieces to 27 ยพโ in length and two pieces to 29 ยผโ in length. Similar to upper boxes the pieces that are 27 ยพโ in length will have pocket holes on each side and the longer pieces will not. Assemble these side pieces to the last remaining top board.

Step 4 – Add Supporting Blocks to Upper Section
Before attaching the section together, sand the boxes and stain.
When attaching coffee table sections together there needs to be a ยฝโ gap between them. Take 2×4 and cut 16 blocks to 6″ in length. These 2×4 blocks will be connected together by pairs. If you have 4×4 boards, then you could use them instead of 2×4 blocks. Drill pocket holes on both sides of these blocks. Make sure to set your Kreg Jig to 3/4″ thick wood, even though you’re drilling thru a 4×4 block. The reason is that you donโt want the screws to come out from the top of the 3/4″ thick board. Flip the top section upside down and attach these blocks on four corners.

Step 5 – Add Supporting Blocks to The Middle Section
Now take the middle section of the table and placed it over the 2×4 blocks. Offset this section a few inches and fasten it to the 2×4 blocks using 2″ wood screws. Again, similar to step-4, attach a 2×4 block to the middle section on four corners.

Step 6 – Attach the Lower Section of the Coffee Table
Finish by placing the last bottom section and fasten it to the 2×4 blocks using wood. You are done with DIY Square Coffee Table.
